Khlestakov, ruined by a bet on his way home from St. Petersburg, is mistaken for an imperial inspector in disguise. Mayor Anton Antonovich and the town's officials panic, flatter, and bribe; as he is betrothed to the mayor's daughter, the real inspector arrives.
When the real inspector arrives, the town's lies, flattery, and daydreams collapse — then and now, onstage and off, no one walks away untouched.
