Secret Love is modern tragedy: Jiang Binliu and Yun Zhifan meet in wartime Shanghai and part, flee separately to Taiwan without knowing, and only reunite after forty years — both already married, Jiang Binliu near death. Peach Blossom Land is period comedy: fisherman Lao Tao's wife Chunhua and landlord Yuan carry on an affair; Lao Tao finds utopia and returns to a changed home. Then the lights go out, and a stranger runs through the theatre calling for her lover.
